Chess World Rattled As Someone Nearly Wins Game

Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the world’s No. 1 chess player, fended off a vicious siege at the hands of U.S. grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, the world No. 2, in London Friday. It was the sixth frame of the World Chess Championship, and one that for hours appeared likely to give the American a critical lead. But Carlsen escaped, and the match remains level, 3-3. Each of the six games so far have been a draw.“It’s a miracle save,” said Robert Hess, an American grandmaster commentating on the match for Chess.com.To catch you up: Carlsen is seeking his fourth world title while his challenger Caruana is trying for the first American world championship since Bobby Fischer in 1972. Their horns are locked in the middle of a best-of-12-game match for the game’s most important title. The two began Friday’s Game 6 in one of Caruana’s favorite openings: the Petroff. (Specific lines of this opening were featured in the deleted video that scandalized the match days ago.) Game 6’s first three moves appear in 12,289 other games in the ChessBase database. In 11,802 — or 96 percent — of those, white moves its knight to f3 on its fourth move. In 17 of those — or 0.1 percent — white moves its knight to d3.Carlsen moved his knight to d3. We’ll keep the draw-filled chart below updated throughout the match. And perhaps we’ll be able to add a decisive result to it at some point. Or perhaps not. And that could be exciting, too.1While the chart below shows a big advantage for Caruana throughout most of the end of Friday’s game, the computer engine is not always perfectly reliable when it comes to numerically assessing complex, fortressed-based endgames. 87654321abcdefgh A dozen moves later, Caruana had captured three of Carlsen’s pawns, including those aspiring to become queens, and still had one of his own. That left him in a victorious position — if only he could see it. On the 68th move, a supercomputer analyzing the game found a guaranteed checkmate a distant 30 moves down the road — down a lengthy bridle path, say. Chess players are second only to maybe biological taxonomists in their proclivity to elaborately name things, and sure enough even this rare position has its own proper name: the Karklins-Martinovsky Variation. But neither player was troubled by Karklins-Martinovsky, they said after the game. Its theory is well known to these elite players. And so they played on. The powerful queens came off the board by move 8, but this loss took no edge off the fight. For a while, the game looked less like a battle and more like a dressage competition, as 66 percent or more of each player’s first 12 moves were knight moves. Many moves later, as the game cantered through its middlegame, winning chances emerged and swelled for Caruana’s black pieces, according to both the computer engine and human grandmaster commentators. (Surprisingly, black, which is usually at a disadvantage, has often had an advantage over white in this match.) While there was no single blunder for Carlsen, there was an accumulation of … what to call them? “Mistakes” seems too serious. “Slip-ups” make them sound like pratfalls. Let’s go with “inaccuracies.” Carlen admitted after the game that he’d made a number of imperfect moves. By move 34, knights and bishops were the only firepower left on the board, and they threatened salvo after salvo in a crucial struggle over the pawns.By the 47th move, Carlsen was down a knight but up three pawns, which gave him a few slim hopes. Two had open routes to the end of the board, where they could become queens. Much delicate, asymmetrical and impossibly complex maneuvering commenced, as Caruana tried to prevent the pawns’ promotion. 87654321abcdefgh Caruana is an unbelievably strong player — though not that strong. As play continued, the silicon’s guarantee quickly went away. If only Carlsen could eliminate the pawns, he’d survive: a bishop and a knight versus a bishop is a theoretically guaranteed draw. Finally, through many feats, Carlsen was able to spirit away his king to a fortress on black’s side of the board. 87654321abcdefgh read more

Credit: Madelyn Grant / Lantern photographerThe No. 18 Ohio State women’s volleyball team bounced back from a pair of 3-0 losses by topping both Rutgers and Maryland over the weekend.Against the Scarlet Knights (7-20, 0-14), the Buckeyes (18-8, 9-5) carried the momentum from the beginning of the match, as Rutgers tallied a .013 attacking percentage for the match and lost in straight sets (25-9, 25-18, 25-13).The Buckeyes’ largest lead against the Scarlet Knights came in the first set, where they started the match on a 21-6 run. While junior outside hitter Elizabeth Campbell led all players in kills with 11, senior outside hitter Erin Sekinger and sophomore middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe had 10 and nine kills, respectively. They all outscored the Scarlet Knights’ kills leaders junior outside hitter Alex Lassa and sophomore middle blocker Lauren Cloyd, who each had six.Sophomore libero Valeria León had a career-high five service aces, marking a career-high in points, as well.Coach Geoff Carlston said after the win that he doesn’t expect sophomore outside hitter Kylie Randall to return this season, because she has an injured ankle.Scarlet Knights senior setter Nicole Bayer, a native of Concord, Ohio, led her team in assists with 14 and added six digs.Even though Rutgers is the only team in the Big Ten without a conference win, Sekinger said the team always makes adjustments regardless of its opponent.“We just had to really focus on handling our own business because we don’t like to take teams lightly in the Big Ten because they’re in the Big Ten for a reason,” Sekinger said.  “So we just had to focus on doing the little things.”Against the Terrapins (9-16, 2-12), the Buckeyes withstood a run by Maryland after the second set to win the match in four frames (25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-12).Freshman outside hitter Luisa Schirmer and Sekinger each tallied 13 kills, while Campbell added 10. Junior middle blocker Tyler Richardson had eight kills on 12 total attacks for a .583 attacking percentage. After the match, Richardson said the team meshed well on Friday night.“This week (in practice) we really focused on defense and being able to work our middles into the offense,” Richardson said.  “Our setter did a great job and we played great as a team. Our defense and offense tonight was really good.”Sophomore setter Whitney Craigo, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio, led the Terrapins in assists with 22 while providing two service aces and two digs. Junior outside hitter Emily Fraik, a native of Wyoming, Ohio, had seven digs, three service aces and three kills. The Buckeyes are currently tied with No. 12 Purdue (19-7, 9-5) in the Big Ten standings, with four teams ahead of them. The Buckeyes are set to travel to No. 9 Illinois (19-6, 11-3) and Michigan (11-13, 6-8) this week. The Illinois game is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m., while the matchup with the Wolverines is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. read more

House approves Rep VanderWall bill helping downtown Manistee landmark

first_img Categories: News,VanderWall News 25Oct House approves Rep. VanderWall bill helping downtown Manistee landmark The Michigan House today overwhelmingly approved state Rep. Curt VanderWall’s bill that would enhance civic, arts and social event opportunities in downtown Manistee and potentially other small towns across Michigan.VanderWall’s bill lowers the population threshold for local governments to receive special liquor licenses connected with a municipally owned civic center or auditorium. The legislation would lower the population needed from the current 9,500 citizens to 5,500, potentially affecting about 50 additional Michigan towns. In Manistee, the legislation would allow the city-owned Ramsdell Theatre to get a license to offer alcohol during events such as plays, special performances and weddings.“One of the best things about downtown Manistee is the Ramsdell,” VanderWall said. “Its value would be greatly enhanced if it were able to get a liquor license the same way municipal facilities in larger cities already do. The current law seems to have a population requirement that is arbitrary and works against small towns like Manistee, and this legislation will change that.”VanderWall, of Ludington, said the legislation will allow government-owned facilities such as the Ramsdell to become more financially self-sufficient.House Bill 4411 advances to the Senate for further consideration.###last_img read more

BTs ad campaign for BT Sport UK cable provider Vi

first_imgBT’s ad campaign for BT SportUK cable provider Virgin Media has asked Ofcom to pause the current Premier League TV rights auction until the broadcast regulator has concluded an investigation into the process. Virgin yesterday filed an ‘application for interim measures’ with Ofcom, calling for a temporary halt on the auction of live UK television rights to top flight English football.Virgin said that Ofcom could do this under the Competition Act to “prevent significant damage to a particular person or category of person”, in this case fans who want to watch live football on TV, calling for a the auction process to be suspended until Ofcom concludes its investigation into Premier League rights sales process in March.“The Premier League has pushed ahead with its early sale of TV rights despite Ofcom’s investigation. With 18 months until those deals begin, there is plenty of time for Ofcom to pause the auction process while it completes its inquiries,” said Virgin Media’s chief corporate affairs officer, Brigitte Trafford.“Failure to do so will leave fans, who already pay the most to see the least amount of football in Europe, facing yet another big rise in the cost of watching live football on TV.”Ofcom launched its investigation into how the English Premier League sells live TV rights for its matches back in November, following a complaint by Virgin Media.Ofcom is considering whether there is a breach of the UK and/or EU competition law prohibition on agreements and decisions that restrict or distort competition. The current Premier League auction could be concluded as early as next month and covers TV rights for the period 2016 to 2019.In July 2012 Sky and BT paid £3 billion (€4 billion) to carve up the matches between 2013 and 2016, with the price likely to increase during the current round of negotiations – something that has the potential to have a knock-on effect on the cost to viewers. However, in a blog post today, Sky defended its investment in sports over the years, with Sky Sports’ managing director Barney Francis claiming that “nowadays, viewers have never been so well served.”“In the month before Sky Sports began, just 27 hours of sport were shown on TV. Only half of an England football international was shown because of a clash with Neighbours. And Botham’s Ashes in 1981 was interrupted for kids’ TV shows. Back then, sport was under-funded and under-valued. Surely no one would want to turn back the clock,” said Francis.Sky claims to offer 5,000 hours of sport a month across seven channels and says that, to date, it has invested “more than £15 billion in sport, providing a much-needed injection of funding at all levels.”“The debate around sport on television is an important one but often harks back to a bygone era. These days, pay TV is far from a niche product enjoyed by the few. Well over half the UK population subscribes to a pay TV service and Sky Sports is readily available in all those homes,” said Francis.According to a recent Bloomberg report, Discovery Communications will join the auction for Premier League rights in the UK, competing against Sky and BT.last_img read more

The 4K settop box market will quadruple this year

first_imgThe 4K set-top box market will quadruple this year, despite an overall decline in the STB space, according to ABI Research. The new forecast claims that the 4K STB market will grow from less than 2 million units in 2015 to more than 7 million in 2016 and will then grow by 46% annually through 2021.At the same time, ABI predicts that the overall set-top box market will drop by about 9% in 2016 to less than US$16 billion in revenue, with both pay TV and free-to-air boxes losing value.“Digital transitions are taking longer than initially planned and the market is experiencing significant downward pressure on set-top box pricing,” said ABI Research managing director and vice-president, Sam Rosen.“Hardware revenues will fall, but value through software and services remains an opportunity. Providers should be looking to take on logistics and lifecycle challenges, in addition to testing and integration, to help the overall market flourish as well as focusing on 4K and HDR colour set-top boxes will in the years ahead.”Regionally, China remains the largest set-top box market by units, having overtaken the US in 2010. However, India will continue to grow its set-top box shipments and is likely surpass China as shipment leader in 2018 or 2019, according to the research.last_img read more

KAIST research team finds cause of sepsisinduced lung injury

first_imgReviewed by Alina Shrourou, B.Sc. (Editor)May 7 2019A KAIST research team succeeded in visualizing pulmonary microcirculation and circulating cells in vivo with a custom-built 3D intravital lung microscopic imaging system. They found a type of leukocyte called neutrophils aggregate inside the capillaries during sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI), leading to disturbances and dead space in blood microcirculation.According to the researchers, this phenomenon is responsible for tissue hypoxia causing lung damage in the sepsis model, and mitigating neutrophils improves microcirculation as well as hypoxia. The lungs are responsible for exchanging oxygen with carbon dioxide gases during the breathing process, providing an essential function for sustaining life. This gas exchange occurs in the alveoli, each surrounded by many capillaries containing the circulating red blood cells.Researchers have been making efforts to observe microcirculation in alveoli, but it has been technically challenging to capture high-resolution images of capillaries and red blood cells inside the lungs that are in constant breathing motion.Professor Pilhan Kim from the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering and his team developed an ultra-fast laser scanning confocal microscope and an imaging chamber that could minimize the movement of a lung while preserving its respiratory state. They used this technology to successfully capture red blood cell circulation inside the capillaries of animal models with sepsis.During the process, they found that hypoxia was induced by the increase of dead space inside the lungs of a sepsis model, a space where red blood cells do not circulate. This phenomenon is due to the neutrophils aggregating and trapping inside the capillaries and the arterioles. It was also shown that trapped neutrophils damage the lung tissue in the sepsis model by inhibiting microcirculation as well as releasing reactive oxygen species.Related StoriesAPPG report highlights need to improve identification and treatment of sepsisStudy explains why several clinical trials of treatments for sepsis have been failedScientists identify mechanism that makes babies more likely than adults to die from sepsisFurther studies showed that the aggregated neutrophils inside pulmonary vessels exhibit a higher expression of the Mac-1 receptor (CD11b/CD18), which is a receptor involved in intercellular adhesion, compared to the neutrophils that normally circulate. Additionally, they confirmed that Mac-1 inhibitors can improve inhibited microcirculation, ameliorate hypoxia, while reducing pulmonary edema in the sepsis model.Their high-resolution 3D intravital microscope technology allows the real-time imaging of living cells inside the lungs. This work is expected to be used in research on various lung diseases, including sepsis. The research team’s pulmonary circulation imaging and precise analytical techniques will be used as the base technology for developing new diagnostic technologies, evaluating new therapeutic agents for various diseases related to microcirculation.Professor Kim said, “In the ALI model, the inhibition of pulmonary microcirculation occurs due to neutrophils. By controlling this effect and improving microcirculation, it is possible to eliminate hypoxia and pulmonary edema – a new, effective strategy for treating patients with sepsis.”Their 3D intravital microscope technology was commercialized through IVIM Technology, Inc., which is a faculty startup at KAIST. They released an all-in-one intravital microscope model called ‘IVM-CM’ and ‘IVM-C’. This next-generation imaging equipment for basic biomedical research on the complex pathophysiology of various human diseases will play a crucial role in the future global bio-health market. Engineers are developing a small cooled turbine to make drones more efficient

first_img Citation: Engineers are developing a small cooled turbine to make drones more efficient (2018, September 4) retrieved 17 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-09-small-cooled-turbine-drones-efficient.html Southwest Research Institute engineers are developing a cooled, radial gas turbine for a small generator that provides thousands of hours of electricity to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a significant improvement to current UAV turbines that only operate a few hundred hours before wearing out. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Turbines are rotary mechanical devices that, when combined with a generator, produce electrical power.”This turbine is part of a generator that’s similar to what the average person might use to generate electricity in their home when the power goes out,” said David Ransom of SwRI’s Mechanical Engineering Division. “The version we’re creating is more compact and efficient, tailored to the needs of a small, unmanned aircraft.”The problem with current small turbine models is that during the generator’s combustion process, the turbine is constantly bathed in high temperature gas that ultimately damages or destroys it.”The hotter the turbine gets, the better its performance,” Ransom said. “But these smaller turbines can’t survive the temperature, so we’ve designed one that has tiny airflow passages that cool the turbine without sacrificing the power of its performance. Normally with small turbines you have to make a choice between performance or reliability, but we’re making it possible to have both.”SwRI has worked with internal passages of high temperature turbines on large version used in power plants and passenger airplanes. To create the small, intricate design with internal air passages, engineers are using a new selective laser melting (SLM) machine, which builds metal parts layer by layer. The new SLM machine, which arrived at SwRI in December 2017, sets itself apart from other 3-D printers in that it’s built to craft layered and highly detailed metal parts rather than plastic ones.To leverage the capability of the new SLM machine, the SwRI Advisory Committee for Research launched the Metals Additive Kickoff Emphasizing Research Synergies (MAKERS) program, an internal research and development effort. MAKERS is designed to encourage collaboration between SwRI researchers on projects utilizing the revolutionary new technology. The new turbine is one of the first products to result from the MAKERS program. MAKERS and other internal research programs invest in innovative technologies that ultimately benefit client-sponsored programs.”Generators that provide power to us and to big aircraft already have cooled turbines, whereas a generator of this size for a small craft does not,” Ransom said. “It’s an exciting engineering challenge, and having the ability to print parts with the SLM machine is a real advantage.” Explore further Provided by Southwest Research Institute New blades and generators for more efficient small wind turbineslast_img read more
